Trotec Speedy 400 for Sale vs. Fiber Lasers: A TCO Comparison

I'm an office administrator for a 300-person manufacturing company. My job covers everything from office supplies to capital equipment, and I report to both operations and finance. When I started looking for a laser system in Q1 2025, I didn't know half the acronyms I'd end up searching. Trotec. CO2. MOPA. Fiber laser weld. The terms all blur together.

Our actual need was more specific: cut acrylic and wood, engrave serial numbers, and mark bare metal occasionally. That put us in the middle of three very different routes. A Trotec Speedy 400. A 300W CO2 laser. And a Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser. If you think those are interchangeable, you'll make the same mistake I almost made.

What we're actually comparing

Here's the short version: the Trotec Speedy 400 is a turnkey CO2 or CO2+fiber platform. The Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser is a source you build into a system. The 300W CO2 laser is an industrial power tool for heavy cutting.

Those aren't three versions of the same tool. They're three different tools that get lumped together because all of them are lasers.

1. Application range

Trotec Speedy laser family

A standard Trotec Speedy 400 uses a CO2 laser for wood, acrylic, glass, leather, paper, coated metals, and anodized aluminum. It's a production tool with a built-in safety enclosure and software that runs like a print driver. The Flexx version adds a fiber source, so you can also mark bare metals without moving the part to another machine. If you keep searching Trotec Speedy 400 for sale, most listings you'll see are CO2 machines, but the Flexx is worth hunting for.

Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser

The Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser is a fiber source and scanner assembly. It does excellent direct marking on stainless steel, aluminum, and even some copper alloys. MOPA's tunable pulse width gives you more control over dark marks on aluminum. But here's the catch: it won't cut acrylic or wood. And despite the keyword overlap, it is not a fiber laser welder. A 60W MOPA can occasionally micro-weld thin foils. Structural joints? No.

300W CO2 laser

A 300W CO2 laser is a cutting machine, often a large-format gantry. It will cut thick acrylic and wood quickly. It can engrave, but the spot is bigger and the heat-affected zone is more noticeable. And it still can't mark bare metal.

First conclusion: If your shop runs mixed materials, the Speedy 400 wins. If every job is bare metal marking, the MOPA wins. If you know exactly why you need 300W, the big CO2 wins.

2. Total cost of ownership

I only started using TCO after ignoring someone's advice and getting burned. Actually, I was the one who ignored it. A quote came in 20% cheaper than the incumbent, and I approved it based on price. Then the installation surprise arrived—$1,200 in missing cables and a $600 service call, plus three days of lost production. I won't go through the whole spreadsheet here, but the cheap machine was the expensive one.

For any laser, my TCO list includes: base price, installation, enclosure and ventilation, chiller or power upgrades, training, software, consumables, maintenance, downtime, and resale value.

Trotec Speedy 400 for sale

The purchase price is the highest. That's the cost of integration, training, JobControl software, and a support structure. Used Trotec Speedy 400 for sale prices reflect that. In Q1 2025, public used-equipment listings showed Speedy systems holding value better than generic imports. I'm not saying you should buy one sight unseen. I'm saying a good used Speedy can be lower TCO than a new kit.

Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser

The sticker price is lower. But you have to build the safety enclosure, interlock, fume extraction, fixture, and emergency stop chain. If you have an engineer who can do that, great. If not, integration labor will destroy the savings. Also budget for EZCAD or LightBurn training if your operator hasn't used it.

300W CO2 laser

Higher power consumption and larger extraction needs. Cheap 300W systems exist, but cheap gets relative once you add three-phase power, a chiller, and maintenance. Per-part cost can be extremely low if you're cutting thousands of parts a shift. For prototype runs, it's overkill.

TCO conclusion: The Trotec Speedy wins for low-volume, high-mix work. The MOPA wins for dedicated metal marking if you count integration hours honestly. The 300W CO2 wins for high-throughput cutting—and not much else.

I put a $180 cost per hour of downtime on every equipment quote. Is that number accurate? Not empirically. But if I didn't put some number on it, finance would multiply zero by zero.

3. Software and workflow

This was the biggest surprise for me.

The Trotec Speedy laser family runs JobControl. It behaves like a print driver. You send jobs from CorelDRAW, Inkscape, SolidWorks, or a PDF, and the machine queues them. Camera registration helps align pre-printed materials. For a shop with frequent job changes, this is the difference between 30 minutes of manual setup and two minutes of clicking.

With a Cloudray MOPA, the software depends on the controller, usually EZCAD or LightBurn. EZCAD isn't bad, but it's a different world. Every hatch angle, speed, and pulse width is visible and adjustable. That's what an experienced laser operator wants. It's not what an internal customer expects when they just need a serial number engraved.

For a 300W CO2 laser, software varies more by supplier. If you're buying a lower-cost gantry machine, ask for a remote demo of the controller software before signing. A demo will tell you whether the machine will actually fit your workflow.

Software conclusion: JobControl gave the Trotec a real workflow advantage in our shop. I can't prove it to the penny, but I can prove it in time. If you have simple repeat jobs, the fiber kit's software is fine. If you have high mix and low patience, spring for the integrated system.

4. Safety, compliance, and risk

The keyword fiber laser weld kept pulling my research toward welding videos. I had to draw a line: if your goal is metal welding, you shouldn't be looking at any of these systems for that job. But for marking and cutting, safety is the difference between a smooth install and an expensive surprise.

All three lasers should be treated as Class 4 hazards. Per ANSI Z136.1, the controls should keep the beam away from eyes and skin. What varies is how much of that is already done for you.

The Trotec Speedy ships as a closed system with interlocks. You still need ventilation and training, but you aren't designing the safety system from scratch.

With a Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser, the wavelength is invisible. A reflected beam can hit an eye before anyone notices. You need an enclosure with proper viewing ports, an interlock circuit, and a laser safety officer who understands fiber hazards.

With a 300W CO2 laser, the main concern is ventilation. Acrylic and wood produce a lot of smoke. Cutting thick material creates airborne particles. The large bed also brings mechanical and electrical hazards you have to manage.

Safety conclusion: For our facility, the Trotec's integrated enclosure was the easiest to approve. A well-built fiber system is equally safe; it just takes more discipline to get there.

Which one should you buy?

If your search history looks like mine and you keep typing Trotec Speedy 400 for sale, start with the materials you actually process.

  • Mostly non-metal cutting and engraving with some coated metal marking? Buy a Trotec Speedy 400. If you need bare metal marking too, look at the Flexx version.
  • Only bare metal serial numbers, barcodes, and logos? A Cloudray 60W MOPA fiber laser can be the smart budget route—if you have the engineering skill to integrate it safely.
  • High-volume thick acrylic or wood cutting? Buy a real 300W CO2 laser. Just don't expect it to replace a small-format engraver.
  • Need to weld metal? Buy a fiber laser welder. A 60W MOPA marking laser won't do it.

I chose the Trotec Speedy 400 Flexx. It cost more, but it let operations sleep at night. That's a line item finance can't see. After five years of managing procurement, I've come to believe that's exactly the cost most quotes leave out.

Bottom line: the integrated machine wins when workflow, safety, and support matter. The kit wins when you have one specific job and the people to integrate it. The 300W CO2 wins when you're cutting serious material all day. The right choice depends on what you make, not just what you want to buy.
