Rush Laser Orders: The 7-Step Checklist I Use with Trotec Laser Systems

A rush order is not just a fast order. It's one where you have one shot, the client is waiting, and any mistake becomes expensive. This checklist is the routine I've built after enough failures that I no longer trust 'it'll be fine.'

Step 1: Verify the Material Identity

Before any cut, I ask three questions: exact brand, exact product line, exact thickness. 'Acrylic' is not a material spec. Neither is 'wood.' Cast acrylic cuts differently from extruded. Maple and MDF behave differently. Corian is a whole different problem.

Use the same material grade, same thickness, same lens. Cut a small square. Measure the kerf. Look at the edge. If the lower edge has excessive resin buildup, adjust speed or power. If the engraving depth is shallow, run again.

I once skipped this to save time on a 60-part order. The material was a different batch of the same product, and my settings were too hot. 35 parts were scrap. I don't skip tests anymore.

Step 7: Write Down What 'Done' Looks Like

Before you start, define acceptance criteria: dimension tolerance (±0.1 mm), edge color, engraving depth, no burn marks, no odor. This is especially important if someone else is operating the machine while you're on the phone with the client.

When the job is running, don't just wait. Inspect the first part and compare it to the criteria. If it doesn't match, stop the machine before it processes another 50.

Common Mistakes That Still Happen

Ignoring the Exhaust System

A clogged filter changes the airflow in the cutting area and that changes the cut quality. Before a rush job, check the pressure differential on the filter or replace it. It's not a luxury; it's maintenance.

Cutting Unknown Plastic

PVC is not your friend. It puts out chlorine gas and can damage the machine and your lungs. ABS can be acceptable but smoky. Polycarbonate does not cut well with a CO2 laser. If you're not sure, don't cut it.

Assuming Support Is 24/7
